The Big Island of Hawaii

Hawaii's Big Island could be one of the best kept secrets in the world. There has been a long-standing identity problem because the island has the same name as the entire state and this island did give the name to the entire Hawaiian archipelago. Commonly known as The Big Island because of its size (it is more than twice the size of all the other Hawaiian Islands combined), it attracts fewer visitors than some of the other islands, but also enjoys more repeat visitors than any other island. Once people find the Big Island, they keep coming back for more.

The best description of the Big Island is probably DIVERSIFIED. Not only does the Big Island have everything the other islands offer, it has more - one of the most active volcanoes, known as our "drive-in volcano," skiing in the winter on Mauna Kea, and white, black and green sand beaches. There are said to be 13 climatic regions on earth and the Big Island has all but two, the Arctic and the Saharan.

For sports enthusiasts, the Big Island is known as the Golf Capital of Hawaii with eighteen spectacular golf courses and several more now in the making. And is home to the Senior PGA MasterCard Tournament of Champions and Ironman Triathlon World Championship. The Big Island is also home grounds of the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament held in Kona, the Billfish Capital of the world. The  best snorkeling and scuba diving is found along the Kona Coast where there are more species of tropical fish than can be found anywhere else.

Yes, the Big Island is big in many ways and still maintains the culture and feeling of Old Hawaii with a lower population density than the other islands. We at the Big Island Visitors Bureau, welcome the media and will strive to furnish you with the information you need and will work closely with you in your editorial efforts.
