Property Info:
Gentle waves and tradewinds sheltering palms and tropical shores create an oasis of tranquillity far from reality, close to perfection. Every detail attended to. Neither flamboyant nor transparent. Simply elegant and genuine. In place of bustling lobbies, green courtyards and sculpture, tea service on a 1930's veranda. Halekulani's treasured heritage inspires the soul of our staff to offer you nothing less than everything.
In the midst of Waikiki a quiet oceanfront oasis: Halekulani. The luxury hotel is located on five prime oceanfront acres on Waikiki Beach. Halekulani is within easy walking distance of Honolulu's finest shopping, dining, entertainment and water sports. It is 25 minutes from the Honolulu International Airport, Hawaii's major gateway for flights from the Mainland U.S, Orient and South Pacific.
Originally a private estate created around a century-old Kiawe tree. Halekulani has been accommodating discriminative travellers to Hawaii since 1917. This tradition of gracious hospitality prevails today in the same beachfront setting, where modern luxury and distinctive services have been combined in a 456 room hotel on Waikiki Beach. The original Halekulani began as a residential hotel owned by Robert Lewers. It consisted of a beachfront home and five bungalows. The hotel was then purchased by Juliet and Clifford Kimball who gradually expanded it and established it as a stylish resort for wealthy vacationers. In 1930, they tore down the old Lewers home and replaced it with a plantation-styled mansion named the Main Building. Following the Kimball's passing, the Norton Clapp family of Seattle bought Halekulani with its Main Building and 37 one and two story bungalows. The Clapps ran the Hotel from 1962 until 1981. However, rising property taxes made the low rise hotel operation economically unfeasible, so plans for a new hotel were developed.
The Clapps then sold the hotel and the architect's plans to the Halekulani Corporation in 1981. The aging bungalows were demolished and the hotel closed for rebuilding for a period of two-and-a-half years. In 1983, Halekulani reopened as an oasis of luxury and fine service. Its guest rooms are arranged in tiered, mostly ocean view towers surrounding grassy central courtyards. The refurbished Main Building, which was tastefully preserved and upgraded, serves as the hotel’s primary dining and gathering spot. It also is the architectural focal point as the building’s roof line is repeated as a design motif throughout the hotel.
Today, Halekulani’s reputation as an oasis of luxury, fine cuisine and personalised service has garnered numerous awards and accolades, including American Automobile Association’s Five Diamond Award (lodging, since 1986), Conde Nast Travellers Readers’ Choice Top 100 Award (top tropical resort), and Zagat U.S. Hotel, Resort and Spa Survey (top three hotels in U.S. 1995/1996).
All guest rooms at Halekulani are decorated in subtle shades of white and beige with accents of blue. Serene understated elegance is very much the theme. Only the finest materials were used in the design of the spacious rooms. Rooms range from 519 to 720 square feet and feature large lanais averaging 100 square feet. Rooms are categorised by view including Garden View, Courtyard View, Ocean View, Prime Ocean Front and Diamond Head Ocean Front. Ninety percent of all rooms offer at least an ocean view. There is a total of 456 guest rooms with 16 specifically designed for wheel chair accessibility. These offer wide doorways, handrails in the bathrooms and closet arrangements to facilitate access. Standard rooms are anything but standard. Shuttered doors glide open, rosy, golden light spills in. Thick, soft robes enhance you, turndown surprises await. Every wish, anticipated and indulged. Even before you are seated you feel like a welcomed guest.
No subtlety is overlooked at Orchids and La Mer where our chefs’ artistry is as dedicated as a popover, as interacted as cuisine francaise. Moments and memories to treasure from daybreak papaya al fresco to a graceful sunset dancer with Diamond Head over your shoulder. From hereafter every other visit anywhere in the world will be compared to Halekulani. Come dance with the moonlight on the beach at Waikiki.
